Noticing things

Looking around at all the other facial hair competitors I realize a lot of them are doing things I just can’t. Also I wish my mustache was thicker. But I also think I have a style going for me right now that not many other people are trying. Not to mention I am only 21, I got plenty of time.

(Insert picture of my latest facial hair style here)

I didn’t take a picture of the last thing I did. But it was 2 circles in my mustache and 2 circles in my beard to match it.

This weekend at Nicole's BBQ I am going to try the brass knuckle style that Lane suggested.

Wax

I love how many brands there are and how they all do something different. Everyone has their own opinions and sticks by their wax.

I want to try them all.

I also want a company to start giving me free wax so I can afford to style everything more often.

Wax Tips

So it’s getting hot out there so styling with wax can get a little tricky as some like to melt or loosen their grasp as they heat up.

I really only have 1 tip.

Buy Cowboy wax. I still have trouble styling with it as it is such a firm hold and dries quickly. But it is worth it if you have the time. I did a bit more of an uncommon style today, the circles, and I used my usual wax to style it. But I knew I was going to be outside for 80% of the day and it was 100+ degrees today so I knew it wouldn’t get along with that. So anyways, after I styled it the way I wanted, I applied some cowboy as almost a tack to keep it exactly where it needed to be. Good news, my moustache hasn’t budged.

I also bought some Clubman’s today, interested to try it because I know some world competitors use it. I also still need to try my Count Wax that I got last week. I’ve been so busy haven’t really styled that much. I want to try hairspray in my beard for some things too.

Meeting next Tuesday. Any ideas for styles?

Beard

I posted a picture earlier of me at the promotion today for Whisker Wars (We hung out at the Best Buy in the Arsenal Mall in Watertown, and handed out free things) and in it I had a new style. Today was a day of many faces.

I started with Clubmans trying to do a style I was calling the wing, making loops each into the last loop all to one side of my face hoping that it would resemble somewhat of a wing you draw for angels when you’re 6. It looked dumb. 1 hour wasted.

So I took it out and tried doing a different loop style with the same Clubman wax in my beard. That didn’t work because Clubmans does not like to reshape itself. 20 minutes wasted.

I washed my beard out and Decided I would try hairspray for the first time. Some people might be able to just pick something up and roll with it, obviously not me. I tried curling my beard around 2 toilet paper rolls, which actually worked quite well and looked pretty cool. However, It was very messy, and very rushed. I need to figure out how to sit down and take my time making it look professional. 30 minutes wasted.

I washed that out and ended up just putting Firehouse in my beard to do 6 points and my usual loop moustache. This later evolved to the style I posted earlier. And I constantly messed around with different attachments throughout the rest of the day.

That was fun to see other things. I should have taken pictures of all the failures and styles, maybe next time. For now I washed my beard out and it’s looking very straight and thick and my moustache is falling perfectly into place.

In the world of advanced bearding you need to keep innovating. This is the potential start to a new style. I am coming up with things for the beard right now. I am using Firehouse and Cowboy wax for this. We will see what comes of this probably next week at the Rhode Island competition.

I need wax recommendations. What kind of range is there? I'd like something that doesn't make my 'stache look classically "waxed" but I want it to keep it's shape!
moustachioed

I’m not sure what classically waxed means, but I’m assuming that greasy look. Which could be from the wax or the application process too.

I use Firehouse for basically everything just because I know it will hold, it does kinda have that greasy look though if you use a lot like me. There’s another person in my club that uses it and get a completely different look. They also post a ton of pictures on their website.

Cowboy wax holds for days but I still think it’s hard to work with, but totally worth it for certain situations. I also think it makes your moustache look like one entity instead of a bunch of hair, which isn’t bad because it is pretty clean, but might not be what you want. Just make sure if you use this you work it in all the way otherwise it looks almost white.

Count Wax and Oregon Wild Hair, both have a good hold, but aren’t as heavy if I can even use that word (Oregon tends to melt a little faster, although I haven’t used it since I’ve tried all the others so I might be wrong about that). They will hold for about a day but then I’d recommend washing it out to reapply for the next, because it could start getting a wax build up if you just keep adding more day after day.

Then there’s the Clubmans. Definitely has a different look and feel. It’s basically like a liquid when it comes out, but I know people who swear by it. If you want to try this one buy the neutral color, all the others ones will change your hair color (while it’s in) and sort of put a tinge on your skin. Although this has more of a matte look to it so it isn’t really a “wax.”

Those are all the waxes I have used, there are certainly others, Sideshow wax, Captain Fawcetts, Rex Wax, I tend to find if you stick with the “homemade” types they hold your moustache a lot better than the mass produced ones like Col. Ichabod Conk’s.

But definitely try applying different ways as well because that will change a lot about your moustache. I always tend to put a ton in just because I want to know that it will hold for as long as I need it to. Hairdryers can be your friend too. Pick one up or use your girlfriend’s (clean it off after because I get yelled at for wax fingerprints). But it can help you continue to shape after you apply the wax (especially Cowboy). Just heat the wax back up and hold it in place while you use the cool setting.

Put a little wax at the base under your nose and brush it across the rest of your moustache, then just wax the tip if desired. The style might not last as long, but you’re using less wax so it wont look as glossy and be more of your natural hair.

Also you can try combining waxes to achieve different looks. The one I posted the other day with the double curls, I just split my moustache down the middle and waxed two on either side with the Firehouse, and then tacked them into the circles with the Cowboy wax.

Everything I’ve heard about facial hair care and styling is personal preference so you can always start from what someone tells you, but make sure you try your own stuff too. I used to use gel when I first had the handlebar, which definitely held but was a much different look. Also hairspray s something a ton of “freestylers” use for their beard and even moustaches, I personally can’t get the hang of it.

Always try different styles too. The English will look much different from a Dali which is different from a handlebar, you can even just wax your moustache down to keep it out of your mouth. Try some different things and let me know what works for you.

Step 2. This is completely different from where I was going. I was trying to make the 2 small orange curlers look like eyes and I was going to connect the two red ones to look like a head. Needless to say that didn’t work. Then I made 2 concentric circles but it larger one just seemed like it was flopping around. Finally I settled on this, which is a smaller, tighter version of the Mickey Mouse beard. We will see how it works in this size when I take the curlers out.
I need to start taking picture of the things I try before I actually decide on what I am doing. Although they are failures in my eyes I think that other people might find them interesting. I see myself as my harshest critic, as most people probably do. I work in an area where the closest thing most of our customers have been to seeing a handlebar is probably that Heineken Light commercial. So if they see my moustache and the curls aren’t the same, or like yesterday when my english wouldn’t stay straight, they could still be impressed. I just feel like I am not bringing out my best game.
Anyways, facial hair rant right there. All I am saying is that I post all these pictures of my successful styles, I know they can all be better.
