Just got a long email from BTUSA, too long for a picture so here is what it said.

Registration for Nationals

Registration is now open for the Second Annual Beard Team USA National Beard and Moustache Championships, taking place in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on October 8, 2011, where the best facial hair in America will win $5000 in cash prizes!  Contestant registration is $40.  Just go to http://beardteamusa.org/nationals/register/  to register.

Tickets for spectators are $10 and are available at the website for Clipper Magazine Stadium here: http://lb1.glitnirticketing.com/lbticket/web/stadiumg.php?event_id=231&status_id=2

If you are not competing, and you’d still like to come along on one of the activities, you can sign up here:  http://beardteamusa.org/nationals/activities/

Brewery Tour on Friday

We have also added a new special event for Championship Weekend.  Those not going to Amish Camp can join other members of Beard Team USA and their fans on Friday afternoon for an excursion to two award-winning Lancaster County breweries (yes, beer tasting!) and a tour of Amish farmland,  where they will have the chance to learn all about the history and lifestyle of the Amish people.  The cost of the excursion is $50.   Those on the excursion who are attending the Meet-the-Amish Dinner on Friday evening will be dropped off at the dinner and then brought back to Lancaster after dinner by bus.  Those not attending the Meet-the-Amish Dinner will be dropped off in Lancaster at about 5 pm.   You can sign up for the brewery tour when you register for the championships.  If you are not competing or coming with a competitor but want to go on the brewery tour, you can sign up here:  http://beardteamusa.org/nationals/activities/

The Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, located directly in the center of Lancaster and about a mile from the competition venue, has now been designated the official host hotel for the championships.  The Marriott is offering us rooms for $129 per night.  Another excellent option is the Lancaster Arts Hotel, located directly across the street from Clipper Magazine Stadium where the championships will take place.

There are several lodging other options in all price ranges as well.  Book your accommodations here:   https://resweb.passkey.com/Resweb.do?mode=welcome_ei_new&eventID=3414050

Re: Less than a month to go ‘til Nationals.

Hi Everyone,

Registration for Nationals.

There is less than a month to go until the Nationals. If you have not already registered for the competition, please do so as soon as you can. Registration is available online at www.bearteamusa.org/nationals/register. Online registration will close on October 4. In all likelihood, we will be unable to accept any registrations after October 4.

Steuben Parade, September 17.

The Steuben Parade in New York City is next Saturday, September 17. If you want to march in the parade with Beard Team USA, show up by 12 Noon on 70th Street between Madison Ave and Park Ave. Also if you are coming and haven’t already let me know, please drop me an email at tahophil@inreach.com so I have an idea of how many beardsmen to expect in our group. Dress as you would for a competition and in the mood to celebrate Oktoberfest.

BTUSA local chapters.

Contrary to what you may have heard, affiliation with Beard Team USA, like membership on the team, has always been and always will be voluntary. Also, just as there are no dues to be a member of Beard Team USA, there is no fee for being a chapter. I fully support all local chapters and am always eager to help them achieve their goals.

Activities for Nationals.

When you register, please be sure to sign up for activities too. As I said in the last newsletter, I am really encouraging people to take part in Amish Camp, which begins on Thursday afternoon. I think it is going to be great fun and also very interesting. Amish Camp takes place at the Hershey Farm and Inn, about six miles from downtown Lancaster near Strasburg, Pennsylvania, which is also the site of Friday evening’s Meet-the-Amish Dinner. I suggest that the Amish Campers just stick around at the Farm for the dinner. If you can’t make it to Amish Camp, then the brewery and Amish Farmland tour is for you. The tour departs from the Convention Center located at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, the host hotel for the Nationals at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7. At the conclusion of the tour, those not attending the Meet-the-Amish Dinner will return to the Convention Center at approximately 5 p.m. Those attending the Meet-the-Amish Dinner will be dropped off at the Hershey Farm in Strasburg and will be brought back to the Convention Center at approximately 8 p.m. in plenty of time for the Whiskerinas’ Fake Beard Contest nearby. Cost of the Meet-the-Amish Dinner is not included in the tour price.

Whether you do Amish Camp, the brewery tour, or neither, be sure to sign up for the Meet-the-Amish Dinner beginning at 5 pm on Oct. 7at the Hershey Farm. The Dinner will be the opening party for the Nationals.

Message from Phil about Nationals

Hi Everyone:

Here are three more good reasons everyone should attend the Beard Team USA National Beard and Moustache Championships in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Columbus Day Weekend.

The Beard Team USA annual meeting and picnic will take place on Sunday, October 9, beginning at 11 a.m.

Intercourse Community Park
Old Philadelphia Pike
Intercourse, Pennsylvania

Intercourse is located about 10 miles due east of Lancaster on Route 340 just past Bird-in-Hand.  It’s midway between Blue Ball and Paradise (which aren’t on Route 340).  Be prepared to play some serious volleyball.  We are working on getting some outstanding vendors to sell delicious food, but you can of course bring your own as well.

As part of the National Championships, Clipper Magazine Stadium will be playing host to an Oktoberfest celebration beginning at 4 p.m. during the championships.  The celebration will feature approximately 15 breweries showing off their products.  Beers will be $2 each.

VIP Lounge:

During the championships, all contestants will have access to the exclusive VIP lounge featuring complimentary refreshments.  The VIP lounge will be located in the sky box area which has a great view of the stage.

Please do all you can to spread the word about this event.  Twitter, Facebook, talking to people.  This is a family-friendly event for anyone who wants to have a good time.

See you in Lancaster soon!

Nationals Beard Championships Phil Olsen Intercourse

January 20, 2012

I mentioned in the last newsletter that this year’s National Beard and Moustache Championships in Las Vegas on November 11 would feature more categories than we have had in the past. Several of you have sent me suggestions, all of which are very helpful, and I have spoken to a number of different people about this. Some of you will remember the comment of Dennis Dickerson (The General) at the meeting in Intercourse, where Dennis suggested that, since many of us are planning on competing at future world championships, it would make sense to utilize the world championship categories at our National competition. I think Dennis’ suggestion is excellent, so I have decided that we will use the world championship categories in Las Vegas. You have less than 10 months to prepare!
