Shit yeah!

I won Freestyle Partial Beard at the All America City Beard and Moustache Contest 2011 (Get your beard on) in Somerville today. It was awesome. Becky was there as well as my friend Jess from back home and a bunch of other MassArt people (Tom, Anna, Jon and a few others) were there competing as well. Tom got top 3 in Full Beard Natural.

Anyways it was fun, and I totally have to go to Nationals now. Becky also said I get to get a tattoo because I won. Sweet.

My Category

So what I have come to learn is there is a lack of partial beard freestylers in the Beard Team USA circuit. I am somewhat okay with this as it gives me a sort of lack of competition. However, I have also come to quickly learn that sideburns/chops are quickly a favorite over a goatee. I intend on changing this.

This is how I was styled this past weekend. I drove from Boston (to Detroit) and spent over an hour on my face.

This was the man who beat me. I can only assume he was local because he had like 10 people wearing shirts with his face on them, he curled his sideburns.

Another small detailed I learned of the judging at this past event was that all 5 judges had never been to or seen and competition before, so I can only assume the loudness of cheers affected the scores proportionally.

I got a trophy very similar to this one. You can’t see the whole thing, but it doesn’t have a baseplate that says what it is (I plan on adding my own).

This is the trophy I could have won (Although it would have said partial beard, not full).

Nationals are in October. Ohio competition in November. And a rumored competition in Maryland this Summer. Goatees are going to make a comeback.

Sad

So this is in a little less than 2 weeks. I really kind of want to go because I had so much fun in Detroit. These competitions are truly like nothing else and they don’t happen often enough (but if they did they would lose their specialness). Anyways, Springfield, Missouri is quite the distance and without a hybrid full of people its quite unreasonable to travel there for a weekend from Boston. So hopefully they will continue this competition and I will be rich by next year so I can get there and win one of these.

Question?

Why is it that when people see a nice moustache now, they immediately think that it is steampunk?

In unrelated news. I am on the volunteer list for a steampunk convention in September. There is a facial hair competition and I plan on storming them. With my face. Let’s see what happens. I will update when it gets closer.

(Yes I put these 2 topics together for a reason)

Old One

This is from my first competition in Somerville. I just got around to cutting out the Boston Globe article about me. It’s titled “His legend grows.” That’s something worthy of quoting out of context on my website!
